Spartans seek epiphanies after loss
Richmond varsity 11-man football coach Nick Persell hopes his Spartans get a wakeup call from their 41-6 season-opening loss Aug. 30 to visiting Harrisonville.
“Certainly not the way we wanted it to go,” Persell said.
The younger Spartans who were appearing in their first varsity game probably got an eye-opener about the nature of Friday night football, according to Persell.
“The speed of the game is probably a little faster than they were ready for,” he said.
But Persell expects those inexperienced Spartans to adapt as the season progresses.
“Any time you (have) got a bunch of sophomores and got a freshman out there every snap of defense, those kids, by the time we get to the end of the season, district play, they’ll be different players than we saw tonight,” he said.
