Spartans ride Mules into the sunset

SPARTANS DOMINATE 40-6 LATHROP – Almost every play seemed to go the Spartans’ way Aug. 27 in their 40-6 road win against the Lathrop Mules. “I’m proud of the way we played overall,” varsity football coach Nick Persell said as players headed for the lockers. Spartan stars included 5-foot-8 senior Layne Cavanah, who returned punts for good field position several times. “Excellent returner. He’s put in so much work to get to where he’s at,” Persell said. “As a freshman, compared to what he looks like now, he looks like a completely different kid. He’s not much taller, but he’s so much more developed.” Cavanah is not the size of former Chicago Bears’ lineman William “The Refrigerator” Perry, but Persell said Cavanah could be called “Mini Fridge.” “He’s definitely one of the toughest guys I’ve ever played with,” four-year starting quarterback Keyshaun Elliott said. “He’s as confident as hell for his size.
