Spartans kick off summer FB camp sessions
The Spartans “kind of got blessed” Monday for their first day of team camp, according to Richmond varsity 11-man football coach Nick Persell.
“The weather’s not too bad,” Persell said on the team’s practice field. “It’s not too hot out here.”
Wide receiver and defensive back Malikiah Tharp, however, noticed the heat. The weather is something he and his teammates must get used to, he acknowledged.
“We’ve just got to try our best to keep pushing through,” Tharp said. “It’s going to be hot all summer long, so we’ve just got to try our best.”
Quarterback and linebacker Jacob Lieberknecht expects the Spartans to adapt to a hot Midwestern summer.
“The more days we stay stacked, the more used to the heat we’ll get and the more conditioned our bodies will be,” Lieberknecht said.
Persell counted 31 for that hot – or notso- hot – first day. He expects around 50 players when fall sports practices begin in August.
