RICHMOND – The Spartans cross country program has candidates to fill the void left by 2020 graduates Jude Rumbaugh and Rylee Adams. Rumbaugh placed 124th at state in 2019 and 91st in ’20. Adams placed 116th in ’18 and 121st in ’19. Senior Stephen Slater and junior Sheldon Goedeke – two of eight high school boys out for cross country Aug. 17 – are among possible replacement. The upperclassmen will assume team leadership roles. Being a leader is “going to be a change, for sure,” Slater said. “I’m used to being the one under Jude,” he said. “And so, now, I have to really change my role and position on this team to be a positive guy and a role model and a team leader.” Slater plans to lead on the racecourse and to be Richmond’s No. 1 runner every race, he said.
