Scott leads all-girls club into high school XC season
Hardin-Central’s cross country program is an all-girls club this season – at least at the high school level.
Jenni Scott, now in her third season of coaching the Bulldogs, is working with two varsity runners: Emily Barrett, a senior; and Valerie Gabel, a sophomore. The program lost one of its boys, Drew Hawkins, to graduation. Hayden Heil and Preston Register, who ran last season, opted not to run, according to Scott.
“I was hoping that they would return this year, even though it appeared difficult for them last year,” Scott said near the end of an Aug. 15 practice at the Hardin-Central schoolhouse.
Both Barrett and Gabel are in their second season of cross country. As the season approaches, the two “know the expectations, they know how meets are … (run),” Scott said.
“They have already talked about goals and wanting to medal at meets,” she said. “So just having a year under their belts with learning how it works, what to expect has set them at an advantage this year.”
