LATHROP – Richmond’s Elijah Sanders had Braxton Ernst’s number again when the two wrestled for the 165-pound title Feb. 3 at the Lathrop Invitational. It was Sanders’ third time to wrestle Ernst, a junior at Lafayette County of Higginsville, in less than two weeks. Sanders pinned Ernst Jan. 25 at Richmond during a triangular with Lafayette County and Polo. Sanders then won their rematch by an 8-0 major decision Jan. 27 at the Highway 13 Throwdown at Higginsville. Coincidentally, Sanders won meeting No. 3 8-0. And in doing so, he helped Richmond place fifth in the team standings with 141 points – 4.5 points behind fourth-place South Harrison. “He’s a tough kid to wrestle,” Sanders said minutes afterward. Leading 4-0 after two periods, Sanders figured he would need to continue scoring points in the third and final period to win the meeting in Lathrop.
