Sanders eyes repeat, Cockrum eyes title for Spartans

Richmond’s Elijah Sanders has the chance to finish his senior wrestling season the same way he finished his junior season: as a state champion. Sanders won the Class 1 157-pound title in February, giving the Spartans their first state champion since 2008. Winning a second straight title means “having a strong mind,” he said after a Nov. 8 practice in the multipurpose building on the Richmond High School campus. In general, wrestling is even more of a mental sport than it is a physical one, according to third-year coach Cody Hogan – a former state champion for Richmond himself. “You (have) got the physical aspect of it, but if you don’t have the mental aspect of it, then you’re not going to get the physical aspect of it,” Hogan said. Sanders is one of two returning state qualifiers for the Spartans, who placed 12th among 52 Class 1 programs at state.
