ST. LOUIS – As he has done since 2006, Richmond High School graduate John Rooney is handling radio play-by-play duties for the St. Louis Cardinals again this baseball season. But as Rooney acknowledged in September in an interview with KSDK in St. Louis, this baseball season is unlike any other of his sportscasting career. “The way I look at 2020 is, anything goes and you’d better stay light on your feet,” he told the TV station. KSDK also reported that Rooney was broadcasting road games from Busch Stadium in St. Louis while watching a large-screen TV set because of coronavirus pandemic concerns. So chances are, that is where he is handling play-by-play duties for St. Louis’ first-round National League playoff series with San Diego, which started Wednesday at Petco Park. At press time, Rooney had at least two more games to call for the Cardinals, who opened their best-of-three series with a 7-4 win.
