Richmond girls win first two at Carrollton shootout
CARROLLTON – A change of pace helped Richmond conclude Monday’s River Valley Shootout play with a win, teammates Emma Hash, Candiace Claypole and Maya Griffin agreed.
After leading Norborne 18-11 at halftime, the Spartans saw their lead shrink to 18-16 early in the second half and responded with a scoring tear. The official final score: Richmond 41, Norborne 18.
“We just figured out how to push it down the floor, and that’s kind of where our points built up,” Claypole said.
Richmond varsity girls basketball coach Kaylee Vantrump stressed pushing the ball at halftime, Hash said. According to Vantrump, it wasn’t her first time to encourage the Spartans to go uptempo.
“We’ve been talking about, especially since last year, just getting them comfortable with throwing the ball up the floor in transition – kind of getting them in a little faster-paced speed,” Vantrump said.
