Richmond girls finish sixth at early season tourney
HIGGINSVILLE – Richmond varsity girls basketball coach Kaylee Vantrump saw the Spartans’ 45-31 loss to Lafayette County of Higginsville in the Husker Classic fifth-place game as a reminder of the importance of utilizing Richmond’s post players.
“We’ve been talking about the smaller details of what we need to do to improve,” Vantrump said shortly after the Dec. 13 meeting on the Lafayette County C-1 campus. “And that second quarter, they went out and they were looking for the post and playing together and swinging the ball and finding shots that … (were) high-percentage shots.”
The Spartans faced a 12-3 deficit entering “that second quarter.” Ella Steele and Adilyn Swope provided Richmond’s first-quarter points – all on free throws. Steele, a junior, made one of two attempts during the opening minute. Swope, a firstyear high schooler, made two of two with 1 minute, 34 seconds remaining.
