Richmond boys work through slight hiccup, trounce Lexington

LEXINGTON – An ending that Richmond varsity boys basketball coach Kevin Jermain considered “a little bit rough” couldn’t stop the Spartans from cruising to a 68-45 Feb. 10 Missouri River Valley Conference (MRVC) East Division road win over Lexington. Leading 37-21 at halftime, the Spartans exploded for a 17-0 third-quarter run. They didn’t allow any points until Lexington sophomore Miguel Gonzalez scored a two-point bucket with 2 minutes, 1 second left in the quarter. The slightly rough stretch more or less followed the run, according to Jermain. It started around midway through the quarter and went through the fourth quarter, he estimated. “We didn’t have a huge issue with it because the effort was still there,” Jermain said. “Just the execution wasn’t quite there.” As for the first half, the Spartans “didn’t do a really good job of matching up … (in) transition, taking away their transition looks” early on, Jermain commented. “That kind of hurt us,” he said.
