RHS girls see defense as positive in RWC defeat

Richmond’s opponents in varsity girls basketball will probably see more man-toman defense from the Spartans the rest of this season, based on the way they utilized it during their 43-34 loss to Braymer in the fifth-place game of the Richmond Winter Classic. Trailing 29-13 at halftime, the Spartans outscored the Bobcats 21-14 the second half of the Jan. 26 meeting at Richmond Middle School. Richmond coach Kaylee Vantrump credited the half to the team’s man-to-man defense. Utilizing that defense has been a focal point because recent numbers at practice have allowed the girls to work on it, according to Vantrump. “(We were) working on positioning (our) last practice and where to go and how to help, and tonight, they just killed it,” she said. Turnouts for practice will be key to continuing to play man defense, Vantrump suggested. “You can’t practice man without (a) dummy offense to go through it and we’re finally getting our numbers,” she said.
