RHS ATHLETIC HOF CEREMONY

Former Richmond teacher and coach Ken Simmons did something June 8 during the Richmond High SchoolAthletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony he had never done: introduce two inductees in an evening. First, Simmons introduced his daughter, Ashley (Simmons) Smith – one of three individuals inducted for athletic achievements not involving 11man football. A 2004 graduate, Smith was enshrined for her achievements in volleyball, cross country, wrestling, and track and field. Simmons’ introduction included a recollection about Smith’s wrestling match with a standout boy wrestler from Odessa – an effort that prompted Odessa fans to stand and applaud her when the match ended, he said. It also included remembrances of her grit as a dual-sport athlete during the fall, when she ran cross country and played volleyball. “Never once did she complain,” Simmons told the audience gathered in the high school commons area.
