Replacement coach leads Orrick quintet into track season

ORRICK – A last-minute coaching change gave Paul Giffin another chance to engage with a sport he loves. Eric Fairchild was slated to coach Orrick varsity track and field. Shortly after spring practices began, however, Fairchild passed the job on to Giffin. “I needed some time to focus on family,” Fairchild stated March 12. When asked if he wanted to coach track, Giffin “didn’t even have to think about it” because of his love for the sport, he said. “(I love) the individual effort culminating in a team sport,” Giffin said Tuesday as his Bearcats practiced outside. “(I) love the relays, love the distances.” An Orrick counselor who has coached middle and high school track in Kansas, Griffin has four boys and one girl to coach as he reengages with the sport that is his passion. The boys are Blake Buchanan, Mason Kusters, Hunter Spears and Zander Stevinson. Sophomore Kirra Vaughn is the lone female athlete. Buchanan seeks to return to the Class 1 state meet in the javelin.
