Red and White Scrimmage ends deadlocked
Cyrus Jackson could say he made a game-saving tackle Monday.
But he couldn’t say he made a gamewinning tackle.
With the score 20-20 and 12.4 seconds left in the final quarter of Richmond’s Red and White Scrimmage at Spartan Stadium, the Red Team attempted a Hail Mary pass from the White Team’s 45-yard line. Forced to scramble, Reds backup quarterback Jayden Pearson ran downfield, looking to score the game-winning touchdown.
Pearson didn’t make it. Jackson, playing linebacker for the White Team, knocked him out of bounds. With time expired, the 11-man high school intrasquad football scrimmage ended in a tie.
“I … (saw) him … going left,” said Jackson, who also played running back on offense. “And I was just like, ‘I can’t … let him score the touchdown,’ and I ran as fast as I … (could) and I made the tackle – I made the play.”
Richmond varsity coach Nick Persell hadn’t planned on calling a Hail Mary, he said.
