The senior was so dominant, in fact, that he won the 165-pound title at the Dec. 1516 tournament in Sedalia. Sanders capped his title run by pinning Marceline’s Jagger Sportsman at 1 minute, 28 seconds.
“Elijah had a good tournament,” Hogan stated Sunday via email. “He came across one kid who was beating him going into the third period, and he remained patient and kept wrestling and came away with the win.”
Sanders was among five top-six finishers for the Spartans, who piled up 408.5 points and placed third among 48 teams, including two Lathrop teams.
Declan Cockrum, Cayden Morris and Madix Hutchings each placed fifth at 120, 126 and 132, respectively. Hayden Happy placed sixth at 190.
Happy “did very well with giving up 15 pounds to his opponents,” Hogan wrote.
Overall, the Spartans “wrestled very well and tough,” Hogan stated.
