Richmond went down fighting in its final varsity baseball game of 2023.
The Spartans fell 7-6 in 10 innings on May 13 at Webb Park in Oak Grove in the Class 4 District 13 Tournament to defending district champion Marshall. According to coach Nick Persell, Richmond threatened to win it by breaking a 5-5 deadlock in the top of the ninth, courtesy of Aidan Ivison’s two-out RBI double, which scored Hunter Mitchell. The Owls, however, answered with a run in the bottom of the ninth and the game-winner in the 10th.
“We were really proud of the way our team competed to the last out of the game,” Persell stated Tuesday via email.
The loss in the single-elimination tournament also snapped Richmond’s four-game winning streak. The Spartans finished the regular season by sweeping Lexington on May 5 in a road doubleheader, blanking West Platte 7-0 May 8 at Southview Park and then edging Lone Jack 5-4 May 10 on the road.
