Persell, Spartans pleased with summer progress

For wide receiver/defensive back Nolan Quick, Richmond’s summer high school 11-man football training ended on a positive note. The Spartans wrapped their offseason training Aug. 1 at Tiger Stadium by participating in a three-team camp, hosted by Excelsior Springs. Oak Park, a Kansas City-based school, also participated. With limited contact allowed, Richmond, Excelsior Springs and Oak Park scrimmaged under various gamelike scenarios. According to Quick, Richmond’s performance was an improvement over its July 31 session, when the Spartans scrimmaged against Excelsior Springs, Lawson and Cameron. “Yesterday, we had a lot … more down sides than we did up,” he said. “But today, we picked it back up and did really … well.” Teammate Bryer Farnan agreed. “I think it was really an eye-opener for a lot of people,” said Farnan, a safety and wide receiver.
