Orrick’s 8-man roster balloons
Depth probably won’t be a problem this season for Orrick in varsity 8-man football.
The Bearcats have 30 high schoolers on their roster, according to coach Kirk Thacker.
“Don’t know what happened. Where were they the last two years?” Thacker chuckled during an Aug. 13 interview on the Orrick practice field.
That beefed up roster includes Jaxon Dorton and Logan Dennis – two of seven seniors listed. Dennis, a kicker/ wide receiver/defensive back, is thrilled with the turnout.
“It means a lot,” he said. “There’s, really, only a handful of people that just go to school and don’t play football now. It’s really a big part of this town.”
Dorton, a wide receiver/linebacker, called the turnout “a very good thing.” It gives the Bearcats a bench to turn to, in case of injuries and/or fatigue, he said. And with the high school consisting of roughly 70 students, “it’s nice to see that almost half the school has come out to play football,” he said.
