Orrick boys give Thacker ‘huge surprise’ with district title

Orrick varsity track and field coach Kirk Thacker got what he called “another huge surprise” at the Class 1 District 7 boys and girls championships. And at least one member of Orrick’s boys team got a pleasant surprise from Thacker before the team bus left the May 6 competition at Adrian. Spurred by wins in four events, the Bearcats won the boys team title with 102 points – nine points ahead of runner-up Concordia. “They have amazed me all season … (with) their hard work, dedication and … willingness to try different things,” Thacker stated Sunday via text message. “I am so very proud of their efforts at districts.” When Thacker brought the district championship plaque onto the bus and announced the Bearcats had won, runner Mason Kusters was stunned. “I was like, ‘Woah,’” Kusters recalled shortly after graduating Sunday in the Orrick schoolhouse. “I did not expect us to get first place, to be honest with you.” Those who led the Bearcats in taking first place were Jonathon Harris…
