Covering Richmond varsity baseball this spring has gotten me to thinking.
The handful of times I’ve seen the Spartans play at Southview Park, their home field, I don’t recall hearing “walkout music.” Just as the term suggests, walkout music is played whenever a batter for the home team walks out from the on-deck circle to the plate to hit. It’s common at pro ballparks. It’s probably a staple of college games, too, though I haven’t watched enough college ball to state that with certainty.
I am certain, however, that it’s a custom at some high school ballparks. Excelsior Springs, for example, plays walkout music for its batters, as I’ve been reminded this spring while helping cover the Tigers for The Excelsior Springs Standard, our sister newspaper. The playlist includes “Ground Theme” from the “Super Mario Bros.” video game and “Still Dre.”
