New Orrick track, field coach stresses plyometrics training

Orrick’s new high school track and field coach brings a new training approach with him. Seth Smith, also the school district’s activities director, replaces Kirk Thacker, who stepped down from coaching varsity track and field, and 8-man football in September 2024. To prep the Bearcats for this season, Smith has incorporated plyometric workouts about every other practice day, according to junior and returning Class 1 state girls qualifier Addison Chapman. “We go to the weight room and we do, like, box jumps and just things that are good for me, because I’m a jumper,” said Chapman, who placed fifth at state last season in the triple jump. “So I’m looking forward to this season and seeing how that affects me.” Smith’s emphasis on plyometrics also is a hit with returning state boys qualifiers Jeff Rohde, a senior; and juniors Lucas Walker and Trent Windsor.
