Kinnard, ‘Cannonball Granny’ take the plunge; swimmer meets fundraising goal
RICHMOND – Jett Shane of the Dolphin Swim Team made Councilman Rob Kinnard and Melanie Hobbs go off the deep end Sunday.
Of Southview Pool’s diving board, that is.
Kinnard and Hobbs agreed to jump off the board if Shane met his goal of raising $10,000 this year for the Arthritis Foundation. As this newspaper reported, he had raised nearly $4,000 as of the Dolphins’ final meet this summer.
Staging a swim-a-thon Sunday put Shane over the top. And Kinnard jumped in, with Shane giving him a push. Hobbs, nicknamed “Cannonball Granny,” jumped in on her own.
Angie Pencook, Shane’s coach, calculated on her phone that the youngster had raised $13,106 through Sunday.
“That’s just a lot of money for a small community,” Pencook said. “They came together. That’s what we do – when someone needs us, we show up.”
