Hogan, Spartans zip from districts to state

HIGGINSVILLE – Richmond wrestling coach Cody Hogan and four of his Spartans had a short week to prep for their final tournament this season. At press time, Hogan; seniors Aidan Ivison, Larry Penniston and Elijah Sanders; and junior Declan Cockrum were at the Class 1 state boys competition. The tournament kicked off Wednesday and was slated to conclude Thursday at Mizzou Arena in Columbia. The four student-athletes qualified for state by placing among the top four in their respective weight divisions at Class 1 District 3 competition, held Feb. 1718 at Lafayette County of Higginsville. Sanders and Ivison placed second at 157 pounds and 190, respectively. Sanders almost won his division, taking Centralia’s Kyden Wilkerson to overtime in the championship match. With the score 6-6 after three periods, Wilkerson scored a takedown to get the sudden victory. An injury default kept Ivison from wrestling Trenton’s Sam Gibson for the 190 title.
