H-C runs with bigger dogs in summer league
New Hardin-Central varsity boys basketball coach August Hoeper and his Bulldogs faced bigger competition the second week of summer-league boys basketball in Lawson – both in terms of school size and bodies on the court.
On Monday in the Lawson High School main gym, the Bulldogs played the host school, a longtime Class 3 program; and Penney, a Hamilton-based school that has been in Class 3 or Class 2 since the 2008-09 season, according to Missouri State High School Activities Association records. Hardin-Central is a Class 1 school.
The Bulldogs fell to Lawson 51-36 and to Penney 43-23. Considering the differences in school sizes and strength of schedule, Hardin-Central “played pretty well” against Lawson, said post player Jesse Doyle, who’ll be a senior this fall.
“But … (there were) definitely a lot of things we could’ve done differently,” Doyle added. “(Missing) layups was a big part of our loss, but we also … (needed) to move our feet a little quicker and get in front of people…
