Richmond has not produced a state boys tennis champion, according to Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) records. That might change this weekend. Felix De Hesselle, a German exchange student who finished his year of study abroad Thursday at Richmond High School, is representing the Spartans at the Class 1 state singles tournament, slated for Friday and Saturday at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. De Hesselle secured his spot by defeating Excelsior Springs’ Carter Pitts 6-1, 6-0 in sectionals May 12 at Maurice Roberts Park. “It’s a big city … I’m looking forward to it, but I’m kind of nervous because that’s a whole different level,” De Hesselle said moments after his victory.
