Elliott’s free throw clinches title in classic

RICHMOND – Referees gave Richmond senior Keyshaun Elliott three chances to make a game-winning free throw against Pembroke Hill. He only needed one. With the Spartans and Raiders knotted at 41 in the fourth quarter of the Jan. 29 Richmond Winter Classic championship game at Richmond High School, Elliott absorbed a foul while heaving a shot from beyond half-court as time expired. Well past the three-point line, the foul earned him three free throws. Elliott needed to make one to win; if not, the game would go to overtime. Elliott sank the first one. Final: Richmond 42, Pembroke Hill 41. “(There were) a lot of things going through my head,” he said. “But I don’t know, I was just focused.” A defensive stop set up the buzzerbeating attempt. After a short Elliott jumper tied the score at 41 with 55.3 seconds left, the Raiders brought the ball into their front court and patiently worked around the perimeter, looking to attempt the game-winning shot.
