Defense produces four takeaways; Spartans conquer Trojans

CARROLLTON – For many of coach Nick Persell’s varsity 11-man football players, Richmond’s Sept. 29 road meeting with Carrollton provided not only a visit to Carroll County, but also a visit into their recent past. In downing the Trojans 48-12 that night in Missouri River Valley Conference (MRVC)-East Division play, the Spartans faced a former Richmond teacher and coach: Andy Frerking. Frerking, who retired in 2022 after coaching Richmond track and field, is in his first season as Carrollton’s head coach. Frerking recalled working with the now-varsity gridiron Spartans when they were in junior high. It was a pleasure, he remembered. He enjoyed seeing them again as varsity players. “It was really fun to get to see all those boys and see what they’ve become,” Frerking said.
