COVID-19 forces changes to winter sports plans

RICHMOND – The coronavirus pandemic is affecting how area schools stage winter sports activities, including practices. Richmond Activities Director Matt Habermehl stated Oct. 30 via email that the Spartans planned to limit spectators for their home girls and boys basketball games to three per coach, player and cheerleader. That system was used during the fall sports season for volleyball. As for girls and boys wrestling, the district has “modified practice, locker rooms and travel accommodations to limit the number of people our wrestlers will be exposed to,” Habermehl stated. And there will be a different atmosphere at wrestling tournaments. For starters, there will be an eight-team limit, Habermehl stated. “Most schools are not having fans at tournaments,” he stated. “We are still in discussion with our administrative team for what we will do at our home tournament.” The district website calendar shows a varsity girls tournament scheduled for Jan. 15, with a boys tournament…
