Comeback win eludes Spartans

HOLDEN – Richmond first-year high schooler Jacob Lieberknecht almost won his first game as a full-time varsity quarterback. And in doing so, he seemed to have won the respect of Holden coach David Diener. With Richmond trailing 17-13 in the fourth quarter of the Oct. 6 Missouri River Valley Conference (MRVC)-East Division 11-man football clash, Lieberknecht led the Spartans into Holden territory before they lost the ball on downs. Taking over on their own 38-yard line, the Eagles held on for a four-point win by grinding out the final 5 minutes, 59 seconds. Lieberknecht had platooned reps with junior Jacob Johnson in several ballgames before taking all of them against Holden. He credited Johnson with preparing him for the assignment. “Jacob Johnson has been a really good friend and a really good teammate all year, helping me out and stuff with certain plays that I’ve been struggling on,” said Lieberknecht, whose unofficial stat line included 127 yards passing, with one touchdown…
