’Cats plan to work on ‘basics’ after sweep by Dragons

ORRICK – Varsity volleyball coach Trevor Ballard made a vow after his Bearcats got swept 3-0 Monday by visiting Mid-Buchanan. “We’re going to be working a lot on our basics because we left basic volleyball behind tonight and it caught us,” Ballard said after the non-conference defeat. The Bearcats, however, executed their basics and other aspects of their game well enough their first two sets to keep them close, falling 25-21, 25-21. They were knotted at 21 when the Dragons staged a 4-0 run to take the second set. “We were right there,” Ballard said. “We had it.” But it got away from them because the Bearcats fell back into a habit that has hurt them this season, Ballard said. “We start getting concerned about moving around on the court and who’s moving where, as opposed to playing solid, basic volleyball, and it catches us,” he said. “And then, all of a sudden, the mental game starts to kick in and, well, there we go.” Mid-Buchanan coach Ron Underwood saw something else kick in…
