Bearcats turn to old-school offense under new coach

ORRICK – New varsity 8-man football coach Kirk Thacker brings an oldschool, smash-mouth philosophy of offense to Orrick. Thacker plans to run the ball often, as he did during his tenures with Hardin-Central and then the Norborne Hardin-Central co-op. “I always have a few tricks, but if we can control the clock, control the score and get 4 yards a carry, I’m pretty well satisfied with that,” Thacker, a Richmond High School alumnus, said Aug. 9 after the Bearcats’ first fall sports practice. Senior quarterback Blake Buchanan will lead the smashmouth attack, which includes sophomore battering ram Jaxon Miller and freshman Jeff Rohde. Although the offense is “definitely a lot different than what I’m used to,” Buchanan likes running it. “He’s kind of spreading the ball to a lot more of our team now, getting more people the ball – not just one to two guys – which I do enjoy a lot,” he said. “I think that our offense is definitely going to improve a lot more than last year, and I think ……
