Bearcats give Thacker emotional comeback win, tribute to son
ORRICK – Kirk Thacker received something unexpected after his first win as Orrick’s varsity 8-man football coach: a tribute to his late son, Dalton Thacker.
Following their 26-20 Aug. 27 win over visiting St. Paul Lutheran of Concordia, his Bearcats brought balloons to the middle of Simmons Field and released them in tribute to his son on what would have been Dalton’s 17th birthday. The teen died in May 2020.
The balloons were black and white – the colors of Norborne Hardin-Central’s co-op 8-man program, for whom Thacker had coached and his son had played. He was moved by the display.
“I had no idea … what they were doing,” Thacker, a Richmond High School alumnus, said.
Showing tribute to Dalton was meaningful to junior Nolan Werle and senior Chanler Woods, both of whom were familiar with him. Werle and Dalton were youth basketball teammates, Werle recalled.
