Bearcats fall to Chiefs in return to ball diamond

ORRICK – Varsity softball coach Zach McGill and his Bearcats got in some unexpected extra practice days before Monday’s 23-2 loss to visiting Santa Fe. The Bearcats were slated to play in the Santa Fe Snowflake Classic tournament at Alma, but the annual tournament was called “due to field conditions,” slugger Laci Smith said. The weather-induced break “was good for us,” Smith said. “We got a lot more practice and we needed that for, like, situational stuff,” she said. McGill, however, would have preferred playing in the Snowflake Classic. “That’s four extra games that were lost out on, and the spring season’s already short enough for us,” McGill, a Richmond High School alumnus, said. The Bearcats were spread in three innings in their return to action Monday – their first game since their 20-0 season-opening March 24 road loss to Wellington-Napoleon.
