A weird, twisted calmness

The sirens started wailing as the sky turned a color only Missouri knows how to make – that eerie, unreal green that seems to come from inside the clouds. There was a confirmed tornado near Independence; warnings stretched across Clay and Ray counties. My phone lit up with alerts and thunder rattled the windows. The wind whipped past in hard, snapping gusts that make you stop what you’re doing and listen. And I did listen – not just to the sirens, but to the storm itself. There’s something about tornado season in Missouri – something more than fear. Tornadoes are dangerous. That much is obvious. They tear roofs from homes, flatten barns and scatter lives across county lines. I’ve seen the damage. I’ve covered it. I’ve heard the panic in a 911 caller’s voice as the wind closed in. But that’s not the whole story. Because for some of us, whether we admit it or not, tornado season doesn’t just bring anxiety. It brings awe. A kind of reverence. A weird, twisted calm.
