Behind the mic, closer to the community
Many aspects of my job bring me joy. I love writing about important milestones in our community, capturing the essence of local history, and experiencing the vibrant energy of crowded gymnasiums as well as the happiness of family events. However, one aspect I have come to love the most is one that took me by surprise: the chance to sit behind a microphone.
Helping co-host “Ray County Voices”, the official podcast of The Richmond News and The Excelsior Springs Standard, has become one of the most meaningful parts of my work. It’s more than just another assignment; it’s a way to connect deeply, genuinely and often unexpectedly with the people who make up the community we call home.
Each time a guest walks into our little podcast room tucked inside the Richmond News office, I’m reminded how lucky I am. These conversations feel different than interviews. There’s no pressure to capture everything perfectly in a single quote. Instead, there’s space to breathe, to joke and to stray off…
