Winona Brown
Winona Marie Brown, 80, of Richmond passed away Sunday, May 26, 2024, at her home. Winona was born Jan. 5, 1944, in Kansas City, the daughter of Edward Saylor and Helen Marie (Tebor) Brown. Survivors include two sons, Robert William Gross Jr. and Stephen Luke Brown (Mary Vandevyvere), both of Richmond; and two daughters, Gena Lorraine Shade (James Schreier) of Kansas City and Mendy Marie (Russ) Malott of Richmond. Other survivors include four grandchildren, Matthew Shade, Ashleigh (Rocky) Hogan, Tiffany (Andrew) Swope and Trevor (Jourdin) Malott; and six great-grandchildren, Lileighan Hogan, Justin Hogan, Rocko Hogan, Collin Swope, Colt Swope and Willow Malott. She also leaves behind three great-nieces, Meghan Carter, Katie Brown and Sydney Brown; a nephew, Hunter Brown; and a sister-in-law, Lynda Brown.
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, David (Tore) Shelton; great-grandson, Wade Swope; brother, Donald Edward Brown; and nephew, David Wesley Brown.
Winona was reared and educated in Richmond, graduating in 1962 from Richmond High School. After high school, she became a wife and mother.
She retired in 2007 from Ford Motor Co. Winona was a member of the United Auto Workers Union No. 249. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as grand worthy matron. Winona also was a member of the Richmond First Baptist Church.
She loved gardening, canning and showing others how to do it, passing on her knowledge. When she wasn’t working, she loved fishing, hunting and camping. Her kids always said, they “were raised on a creek bank.”
Winona will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Richmond First Baptist Church. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.
Visitation with funeral services will be held Saturday, June 8, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m., followed by services at 11. Interment will be held in Richmond Memory Gardens.
