Velma Kathryn Brown, 77, of Cowgill passed away Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Cameron Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Velma was born July 24, 1947, in Cuba, Mo., the daughter of Henry and Nellie (Smith) Brown. Survivors include her brother, Jesse Brown of Cowgill; and sister, Audery Grover (Greg) of Wellsville, Kan. Four nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Wayne (Debbie) Brown; half-brother, Russell Light; and a half-sister, Elizabeth Corum.

Velma was a lifelong resident of her birthplace, completing her education locally and graduating from Excelsior Springs High School.

She pursued her passion for nursing at St. Luke’s School of Nursing, a prestigious institution founded in 1903 to provide nursing education. Velma dedicated 50 years to her nursing career, demonstrating unwavering commitment and compassion. Beyond her professional life, she found joy in gardening, crafting and caring for animals.

She was of the Christian faith. Graveside services were scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in Pilot Knob Cemetery in Rolla. Visitation was scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond.
