Thomas Dewey Doss Sr.
Thomas Dewey Doss Sr.,” age 76, of Richmond, passed away at 5:37 p.m., Tuesday, September 28, 2021, while surrounded by his loving family at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Richmond, Missouri.
Tom lived earnestly and was granted an earthly life of seventy-six years, nine months, and twenty-six days.
On December 2, 1944, Neil Edward and Ollie Irene (Franklin) Doss of Hardin, Missouri, was blessed with their son, Thomas Dewy Doss. Tom had many siblings before and after his arrival, and their home was a good balance of laughter and hard work. Tom attended school in Henrietta and Hardin and enlisted in the Navy right after high school. Tom was the City Marshall of Hardin in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was of the Christian faith and believed in the Lord.
Tom asked for the hand of Maxine Roberta Bylieu, and they were united in marriage in Hardin, Missouri, on August 30, 1965. This union was blessed with one son, Thomas Dewey Doss Jr. They shared fifty-four years of marriage, making memories, and watching their son and grandchildren grow. Sadly, Maxine preceded him in death on May 23, 2020.
When Tom was a young man, he traveled to Kansas and Oklahoma for wages during the wheat harvest, but Tom was a full-time cattle farmer. He also owned a roofing company in the 1970s, and he purchased and flipped several properties and was on several make-over home shows in Kansas City. Finally, he retired as a truck driver for Jim Kidwell Construction Company but remained a cattle farmer with his son.
Tom was a wonderful father, grandfather, father-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle. He loved his cows, raising chickens with Maxine, and farming, but he loved his family and friends most of all. Tom absolutely adored his grandchildren and would always be there for them if there was a need. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting deer, squirrel, rabbit, and coon hunting with his coon hounds. In addition, Tom enjoyed fishing, setting trotlines on the Crooked River, hunting for mushrooms, cutting firewood, and collecting tractors. In the quiet moments, he would go on a treasure hunt with his metal detector. Tom also enjoyed dabbling in antiques by attending estate auctions with Maxine, or they would find a yard sale or garage sale.
Tom is survived by his son, Thomas Dewey Doss, Jr., and his wife Debra of Richmond, Missouri; three brothers, Kenith Doss, David Doss, and Johnny Doss; a sister, Maxine Shricknise; three grandchildren, Amanda Perkinson (Ethan) of Richmond, Missouri, Sherri Doss of Parkville, Missouri, and Marcus Doss of Richmond, Missouri; and three great-grandchildren, Madison Perkinson, McKenzie Perkinson, and Danny Tucker III; four sisters-in-law, Sarah Doss, Mary Bylieu, Audrey Fields, and Eva Rickstrew; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Maxine Doss; sister Bertha Flewelling; two brothers, Edward Doss and Carl Doss; a sister-in-law, Vicki Doss; and a grandson, Thomas “Tommy” Dewey Doss III.
