Michael “Mike” Wayne Vance, 72, of Richmond, passed away Friday, July 5, 2024, at his home. Michael was born Dec. 12, 1951, in Lexington, the son of Vern E. and Lillian “Florence” (Hessenflow) Vance. He was united in marriage to his soulmate, Tobi Todd, of Harrisonville on Jan. 16, 1999. She survives of the home.
In addition to his wife, Michael is survived by his daughter, Amy (Corey) Weir of Richmond; two sons, Jon Vance of Kansas City and James (Chandler) Vance of Liberty; and three grandchildren, Lilly Yocum, Alex Vance and Bella Weir.
Other survivors include his great-grandson, Maverick Vance; two stepsons, Josh (Stacy) Higgs of Hardin and Troy (Rachael) Higgs of Blue Springs; five step-grandchildren, Noah Higgs, Eli Higgs, Amora Higgs, Emberlyn Higgs and Robert Higgs; brother, Mark (Juli) Vance of Leawood, Kan.; and his beloved dogs, Chip and Dale.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Lyndsey Jo Vance.
Mike was raised and educated in Henrietta, where he developed a strong foundation for his lifelong love of learning and adventure. A proud graduate of Richmond High School, class of 1969, he continued his education at Wentworth Military Academy and later at William Jewell College, earning a bachelor’s degree in history. Mike’s passion for history was evident throughout his life, and he was known for his extensive knowledge and love of sharing historical insights with others.
Mike dedicated 27 years of service to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, retiring in 2004. His commitment and dedication to his work left a lasting impact on those he served with and the community he protected.
An avid outdoorsman, Mike found joy and peace in nature. He spent his falls and winters hunting and trapping, a tradition that connected him deeply with the land and its rhythms. During the warmer months, Mike could often be found by the river or tending to his watermelon patch, where he enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and the beauty of the seasons.
Beyond his professional and outdoor pursuits, Mike was a loyal husband, father, brother and friend. His family and friends will always cherish the memories of his warm presence, wise counsel and unwavering loyalty.
Mike’s love for history and the great outdoors, combined with his dedication to family and friends, made him a truly remarkable and unforgettable individual. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Visitation with memorial services will be held Saturday, July 13, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, with visitation beginning at noon, followed by the services at 1 p.m. Inurnment will follow the services in Richmond Memory Gardens.
