John Edward Scowley, M.D., 72, of Richmond, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020, at St. Luke’s Hospital East in Lee’s Summit.

John was born on Aug. 20, 1948, in a small town north of Chicago, the son of Edward Leroy and Kathryn (Kincaid) Scowley.  He was united in marriage to Barbara Phipps of Kansas City on Nov. 26, 1983. She survives of the home.

Additional survivors include one son, John “Scott” Scowley and fiancé Megan Werle of Kansas City; one daughter, Erica Clough and her husband Case of Lone Jack; and one granddaughter, Collins Clough.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Peter Scowley; and sister, Kathy Hendrickson.

Dr. John “Doc” Scowley, M.D. was raised on a farm in Paw Paw, Michigan, where he graduated high school in 1966. Dr. Scowley enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1968. He was stationed in Phan Rang, Vietnam, as a mechanic on F-100 aircraft.

Returning stateside in September 1970, Dr. Scowley moved to Alabama close to his lifelong friend, Mickey Pitts, whom he had met in the Air Force. Mickey’s father was instrumental in persuading Dr. Scowley to pursue his education at the University of Alabama, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology and minored in chemistry. Dr. Scowley furthered his education obtaining a doctorate of medicine degree from the American University of the Caribbean. Dr. Scowley’s residency brought him to the Kansas City area in 1982. In 1985, he established roots in Richmond with his wife, Barb. In 1988, Dr. Scowley purchased Dr. Davault’s medial practice, for years known as The Medical Center, which in 2016 joined Meritas Health.

Dr. Scowley served the community for 35 years in numerous capacities, including as medical director of the Ray County Ambulance District, a member of the Richmond Board of Education, medical director of the Ray County Memorial Hospital’s emergency room, medical director of Shirkey Nursing Home and Hospice, and adjunct instructor for the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.

Dr. Scowley was a supporter of organizations such as the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Duck’s Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation and Pheasants Forever. Dr. Scowley enjoyed time with family and friends, relaxing at the lake, cooking/grilling, being out in nature hunting or fishing, the Kansas City Chiefs Football, the Kansas City Royals and University of Alabama football. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the United Christian Presbyterian Church or the Missouri State Veteran’s Cemetery in Higginsville.  They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 8, 2021, at the United Christian Presbyterian Church in Richmond. 
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the United Presbyterian Church in Richmond. Masks will be required to attend all services.

A private family committal service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 14, at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville.  Full military honors to be provided by the Air Force and the Ray County Veterans.
