Ileen was born on April 12, 1925, in Willis, KS, the daughter of Earl A. and Mary Jane (Shupe) O’Brien.  She was first united in marriage to Donald Ray Downing of Horton, KS, on September 11, 1943; he preceded her in death on June 5, 1994.  She was then united in marriage to Lendall Dean Wall of Richmond on August 20, 2017; he preceded her in death on May 10, 2021. Survivors include: son, Donald Earl Downing of Oak Grove; daughter, Deborah Tompkins of Richmond; daughter-in-law, Jamie Gillespie of Independence; five grandchildren: Chad (Melissa) Fouts, James (Kristen) Fouts, Richard (Dolores) Tompkins, Marissa (Joseph) Orender, and Christine (Jeff) Davis; 9 great-grandchildren; she is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and two brothers, Fane Glen (Beverly) O’Brien and Earl Vanderslice. At 14 years old, Ileen was baptized along with her two brothers in the First Baptist Church of Horton, KS. On September 11, 1944, Ileen married her high school sweetheart, Donald, while he was serving in the Army Air Force in World War II. After moving to Ray County, she and Donald became members of the Bethany Church of the Brethren until his death in 1994.  Later, Ileen became a member of the Birchwood Baptist Church and then the Richmond Christian Union Church.  She later renewed her membership at the Bethany Church of the Brethren. Ileen and Don liked camping and enjoyed float trips with their children, their families, and friends.  After Don’s retirement from General Motors, they cared for both their mothers in their homes for several years.  Then they took a long-planned trip across the eastern states, including Florida and Washington D.C., before Don’s health failed. She considered herself a homemaker, but occasionally she worked outside of the home.  During her retirement years, she enjoyed volunteering at her church, local school, and Salvation Army in Richmond.  She also volunteered t the Senior Center and local hospital.  Ileen was a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Council, the Senior Center Advisory Board, and the Hospital Auxiliary.  She was a dedicated member of the God Squad. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Bethany Church of the Brethren.  They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home, 507 East Main Street-P.O. Box 190, Richmond, MO 64085.
