Grace “JoAnn” Burnine, 69, of Richmond, died Sunday, October 18, 2020 at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, surrounded by her loving family.

JoAnn was born on November 5, 1950, in Kansas City, KS, the daughter of Cecil and Lucille (Studder) Martin.  She was united in marriage to Cleatus Lee Burnine of Richmond on July 26, 1968; he survives of the home.

Additional survivors include son, Chad (Amy) Burnine of Richmond; two grandchildren: Isabella and Brody Burnine; several nieces and nephews; and her faithful companion, Oreo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Judy, Donna, and Jean.

JoAnn was raised in Camden and came to Richmond as a Freshman, when the Camden School closed.  She graduated from high school in Richmond in 1968.  After high school, she worked for Farmland in Kansas City, Children’s World Clothing Store in Richmond, and at Dunbrook Coat Factory in Lexington.  JoAnn was best known as the Ray County Treasurer, where served for over 24 years, retiring in December 2014.  JoAnn was an active member of the Richmond Kiwanis Club and the Richmond All Sports Club.  She enjoyed playing Bridge and belonged to the Bridge Babes Card Club; the Bridge Babes not only played cards together for many years, they also enjoyed trips together; one special trip was when they went to New York City together, dressing up as a deck of cards and were interviewed on Good Morning America.

JoAnn and Cleatus enjoyed riding motorcycles for many years, with all their friends.  Most of all, JoAnn loved to spoil her grandkids and enjoyed attending all their activities.

The Burnine family especially wishes to thank Sheryl Doss, JoAnn’s excellent caregiver, and Janet Sneed and Karen Jewell for all the visits and their acts of kindness.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Crossroad Hospice or the Richmond VFW.  They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home, 507 East Main Street-P.O. Box 190, Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation with funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2020, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m., with services to follow at 10:30 a.m.  Burial will be in Richmond Memory Gardens.  Reverend Brian Guy to officiate.  Please remember to share your memories of JoAnn with the family by visiting www.thurmanfuneralhome.com.
