BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PHILLIPS
Benjamin Franklin Phillips, 86, of Camden died Monday, April 7, 2025, at Research Hospital in Kansas City. Ben was born May 20, 1938, in Richmond, the son of Grover C. and Dora Ester (Travillion) Phillips. He was united in marriage to Mercedes Marie Sutton of Camden. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include his sister, Becky Campbell of Pruitt, Ark.; children, Amy Hankins and Emmitt Elliott; and grandson, Garrett Hankins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Dora Phillips; brothers, Ralph A. (Peanut) Phillips, James Phillips, Charles Phillips and John W. (Dub) Phillips; and sisters, Dessie M. Phillips, Margaret Lancy, Betty (Linebaugh) Whittle, France Tutor, Mable Haller, Zella Mae, Virginia Carter and June Racy.
Ben was a proud graduate of Richmond High School. Following graduation, he served his country with honor and distinction in the U.S. Army, dedicating 22 years of his life to military service.
After his time in the Army, Ben continued to lead a life rooted in service, family and community.
An avid outdoorsman, Ben found joy in fishing and hunting, and he had a natural talent for working on cars. Whether he was out in the woods, by the water or in the garage, he was in his element, doing what he loved.
Ben was a devoted family man, always putting others before himself and stepping in to help anyone in need. He was a father figure to many, and a source of wisdom, strength and kindness in the lives of those who knew him.
Deeply loved by his family, friends and the community, Ben’s generous spirit and steady presence will be profoundly missed. He always hoped for the best for everyone and made a lasting impact on countless lives.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 18, at the funeral home. Military honors provided by the Army and the Ray County Veterans. Burial will be in the Dockery Cemetery.
