Richmond denies South Camden daycare rezoning

A rezoning request intended to accommodate a larger South Camden Street daycare was denied as Richmond City Council members recently took action on several property and business matters.

Interim Community Development Director Heather Robertson explained Brittany Nicholson requested the property at 307 South Camden Street be rezoned from R-1 Single Family Dwelling District to S&O Service and Office District. Nicholson currently operates an in-home daycare at the property under a 10-year conditional use permit issued in 2020 that allows a maximum of 10 children. She sought the rezoning to change her state licensing classification to a Group Home Day Care and increase the number of children she could serve to 18.

Robertson explained the property falls short of the S&O district’s minimum width, depth and total square-footage requirements. The property is approximately 7,800 square feet, compared with the district’s 8,000-square-foot minimum.
