Volunteers offer public Thanksgiving
RICHMOND – The action plan requires assembly-line precision to create, package and distribute Thanksgiving dinners to scores of people at New Beginnings Church.
Several volunteers in the kitchen – among them Misty Carpenter, Linda Powers and Eleanor Covey – bake the turkey and cornbread stuffing, stir the green beans and gravy, and mash the potatoes.
Nearby, Bubba Ridenour and Jack Covey, with an electric blade humming and gloved hands picking, dissect turkeys. Others – including Margaret Wilton, Alycia Ferrara and Brad Covey – slice and package cake and pie.
While volunteers prepare the feast inside, from outside comes a call on a walkie-talkie from Christina Covey. People have lined up their vehicles on Shaw Street in front of the church for dinner. She calls their orders into the kitchen.
“We served about 300 last year, but we expect more this year,” Powers says while opening the oven to see how the cornbread dressing is coming along: golden brown.
