Two wheels, one mission

MIRANDA JAMISON Two women riding through miles of Missouri hills aren’t just in it for the challenge – they’re pedaling with purpose. This week, their cross-state bicycle journey brought them to Richmond, warmly hosted by Jerry and Marian Berning, longtime members of Faith Lutheran Church. For Kathy Sower and Carla Elenz, both from Michigan and active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML), Richmond was one of many meaningful stops along the journey from the LWML headquarters in St. Louis to the national convention in Omaha, Neb. Their ride spans over 400 miles and aims to raise awareness and support for global missions – one mile, one mite at a time. Sower recently retired from her career as an environmental mapping specialist for the State of Michigan. Her work involved computerized map making, similar to Google Maps, called geographic information systems.
