RICHMOND – The 911 sales tax could be splintered, with 40% going to the Ray County Sheriff’s Office and the rest staying with the 911 Board, if two things happen: The Ray County Commission agrees to place Sheriff Scott Childers’ tax diversion idea on the August ballot and Voters say yes to the split. Childers presented reasons for the idea to the commission April 30, including his opinion that the 911 Board has more money than needed. 911 Board President Paul Harris presented counter arguments, including that voters agreed to the 1% sales tax to get what the board is working to provide – better emergency communication. Childers said the 911 Board plans to construct a replacement building. He said he wants the same – a guaranteed portion of the money to build a justice center that could cost up to $12 million – nearly four times the anticipated 911 center’s cost.
