Summer school students turn lemons into lemonade, learning valuable business skills

When life gave them lemons, Alaze Chowning and her second-grade summer school class made lemonade. Chowning’s students learned that lesson through hard work, math and entrepreneurship, topped off with a party and a refreshing beverage. The Sunrise Elementary students worked three weeks with lemons in preparation of running a lemonade stand, Chowning said. Students practiced making lemonade using proportions and measuring cups, and squeezing the lemons themselves. “My goal was to find a subject that captivated their interest but also reinforced the skills they need for third grade and (to) become conceptual learners with (the) use of money,” she said. The class had many science experiments within the unit. The students made their own recipe, then tried it and modified it. They learned about buoyancy and why things float, based on their density.
