Suit against district stays
RICHMOND – Former Richmond School District Superintendent Mike Aytes is pulling up roots.
“We are moving to Spanish Fort, Alabama,” he said. “We’re moving down to be closer to the grandchildren.”
Although leaving Richmond, Aytes said he will continue to press his lawsuit against the Richmond Board of Education. He alleges the board fired him in retaliation for legal and necessary acts involving his work as superintendent, something board members have denied.
“I will make whatever trips back that are needed,” he said.
There is no indication how long the litigating will take; possibly years.
Four of the seven school board members who terminated Aytes in March 2020 have since left the board: Vice President Penny Vandiver and Keri Nettles, who allege the now all-male board is not interested in female perspectives; Monica Shane, who wanted to rejoin the board, but withdrew her name in close proximity to the resignations of Vandiver and Nettles; and Jason Morrill, who has moved from…
